Secret Japanese Cave Bangkalan

Secret japanese cave
The Japanese tunnel served multiple purposes such as being a military command post, ammunition storage and bomb shelter. Being an underground structure, it remained hidden from above and was useful for covert activities. However, building such a tunnel required extensive planning due to the difficulty and expense of digging through solid rock, so only the most important ones were constructed.

We stumbled upon this cave while interacting with the parking attendant, who seemed knowledgeable. We paid him to guide us around, and he shared the story behind it. According to him, during the war, the Japanese used convict labor to construct the tunnel, which served as a command post. There was also a special room believed to have a Buddhism statue in the pillars, but it was destroyed after the war by the locals who were predominantly Muslims.

The remote location of the tunnel and its numerous rooms made it useful during the Dutch-Indonesia war. However, it was later abandoned and used for worship by the locals. That is why there is graffiti of the Garuda on the walls.
