On 3 September 1944 Germant roops withdrew, coming from Enghien. They were attacked in the hamlet Patriot by partisans and civilians. The Germans were captured.
At that moment a retreating SS division arrived from the Geraardsbergsesteenweg. The Division rushed to the aid of the German soldiers. Fortunately, English pilots intervened.
Nevertheless, 26 civilians were killed, namely 4 resistance fighters and 23 civilians. Twenty German soldiers also died on this spot.
