The monument was placed at this location in 1994. The memorial itself was designed in 1985 as a trap that leads to an obelisk that is something in between a chimney or a victory column. Two tapered walls with rails on top that evoke the memory of the death trains. The names of major extermination camps are engraved on the walls, at the foot, large and small footprints of men, women and children.
Two plates bear the text: "That THEY have suffered and hoped, but that YOU will fight for freedom and that they have been able to burn the bodies, but never their spirits".
The Bergen-Belsen camp, north of Hanover, was primarily intended for "protected" Jewish deportees whom the Nazis used as currency, which did not prevent 50,000 people from dying here, more than 10,000 of them during a typhoid epidemic. Anne Frank was among the victims
