Belgian War Graves Vrasene

The cemetery in Vrasene contains the grave of a military victim of the Second World War. It concerns EVRAERT Hubert, soldier of the 37th Line Regiment (2nd Bat 5th Comp)
Fallen on the field of honor Ertvelde on May 22, 1940."
He was killed during German artillery bombardments on their positions on the Ghent-Terneuzen canal while they were taking over from the 33rd/34th Line.

There is the grave of DE PAEP Wilfried, soldier V.V.E. 10th Wing at Kleine-Brogel, victim of the plane crash at Sake-Masisi (Congo) on 19 July 1960. He died on 21 July 1960 at Burundi Usumbura (Bujumbura).
41 soldiers were killed in that crash, including 36 members of the VVE 10th Wing Air Force and the five crew members of the C-119 Flying Boxcar.

There are also graves of civilian victims of the Second World War, mainly victims of aerial bombardments.

Petrus DOFFIJN and Theofiel DE BOCK: victims of the war on September 9, 1944.
The Waasland was liberated in September 1944. People waited anxiously for the arrival of the liberators. The Germans withdrew, but sometimes reacted aggressively during their retreat, causing several more victims.
Finally, on September 9, Vrasene was liberated by the Canadians.

Even after the liberation, the country was not spared from bombings and several villages and towns were still hit by German V-bombs.

Petrus DAELMAN: died in Germany on October 16, 1942.
