Memorial Former American Military Cemetery Nr. 1 of Belgium

On September 8, 1944, the American cemetery in Fosses-la-Ville was inaugurated. The cemetery was on the hill "Campagne du Chêne". In the first American cemetery in Belgium, 2199 American soldiers were buried with another 96 French, English, Polish and American graves. On a lower part there was room for fallen German soldiers with about 1600 graves. From 1945, annual commemorations were held. On July 12, 1948, the cemetery was closed and decommissioned.
The remains of the fallen American soldiers were sent to the Ardennes American Cemetery and Memorial in Neuville-en-Condroz, the American War Cemetery in Henri-Chapelle and a number was repatriated to the United States.

The monument is made of stone with a commemorative plaque with the following English and French text:

In proud Memory of the 2199 American Soldiers here burried with 96 Allied Brothers in Arms.
They gave their lives to set free our country in the fights of fall 1944 and in the Battle of the Bulge.
