German War Graves Bačkonis
Near Bačkonis is a small German war cemetery from the First World War. About 20 concrete grave crosses, partly damaged, have been preserved. Originally there was a wooden fence around the cemetery, currently you can only see the contours of a low wall of earth around the graves. Here are buried German soldiers and also a number of unknown Russians who fell mainly in August 1915 during the German attack towards Vilnius. The story goes here that during the Second World War, a German soldier found his father's grave here. It is unknown which soldier this would be.
Location: on an unpaved forest road parallel to the highway A1 (Kaunas-Vilnius). To be reached from the Bačkonis/Liutonis exit or in the direction of Vilnius from the parking lot at the (currently closed) roadside restaurant Skardis.
