Thirteen civilians were killed at this location on 25 September 1944 by German shellfire, despite the fact that a temporary armistice had been agreed.
They were among the 30,000 residents of Kerkrade who were forced to evacuate by the Germans because Kerkrade was in the defense line around Aachen.
The memorial also commemorates two other civilians who died in the evacuation and an American soldier who was killed near Hoeve Keverberg earlier that month.
