Memorial window Sint Dominicuskerk Leeuwarden
The Our Lady of Leeuwarden refugee window in the Sint Dominicuskerk in Leeuwarden was erected in memory of the war refugees from Tiel and Roermond.
Transcription from the private diary of and kept by Theo Lambooij, former Conductor and Organist of the church choir "Honor to God" of the St. Dominicus Church in Leeuwarden (diaries 1940-1968):
"Thursday, February 15, 1945
What turns Leeuwarden upside down these days are the thousands of evacuees from Venlo, Roermond, Tiel, Wageningen, etc. There are at least 50,000 spread over the entire province. Our churches have never been so full as in recent weeks. Mass is read in all villages as before 400 years ago! It is a true Roman invasion and it would be a wonder if some of it did not stick."
From the archives: "Mr. W van Woerkom in Nijmegen was asked to make a design for the windows in the Mariakapel.
These drawings are available at the meeting. Broadly speaking, they can be approved; a new design will be requested for a single detail. These windows cost Fl.2500,- of which Fl.500,- is paid for by the Congregation of Mary.
According to the treasurer, the state of the cash is sufficient to bear these costs. It is resolved to take this matter forward."
