The remains of this farm are located between Vacqueville and Neufmaisons near the D168.
This farm was the scene of bloody fighting between 800 maquisards of the GMA Vosges (Groupe Mobile d'Alsace-Voges) and the German troops on September 4, 1944.
The maquisads had regrouped in the woods with the aim of attacking the Struthof camp, where dozens of themselves had been slaughtered on the night of September 1–2 alone and many others deported to the German camps without return.
They waited at the Viombois farm for a parachute drop of weapons scheduled for the following night. But they were surrounded. Under the command of René Ricatte, alias Lieutenant Jean Serge, they faced the encirclement and forced the enemy to retreat. In the battle, 57 maquisards fell for the freedom of France.
The ruins of the Viombois farm have been converted into a memorial and several plaques and an obelisk commemorate this tragic event.
There is also a monument in memory of the resistance fighters.
And there's a wall with the names of all the victims of Viombois. Both the casualties of the Battle of Viombois and the collateral casualties.
There is also a memorial to SOE agent, Maurice Boissarie who was killed by the Germans.
