Peel-Raamstelling - Foxhole North

On Fortification Vossenberg, the remains of three foxholes can be seen. These formed the connection between the two groups of casemates. The sign reads as follows:
The infantry shield with a thickness of 11mm and a weight of over 41 pounds was placed on the breastwork of a foxhole in order to fire the rifle under cover. To a short distance, the portable armor shield provided resistance to German rifle "armor" ammunition. The sides of the shield curved forward to provide protection against ricocheting bullets and hits at the rim. The embrasure could be closed by a hinged flap. A sturdy, folding leg with ground pin provided stable anchoring. Infantry shields were confiscated and scrapped by the Germans as war booty after the capitulation of the Netherlands; only a single example escaped this fate. In Museum Truijenhof in Meijel you will find an original copy.
