Peel-Raamstelling - S-Casemate nr. 2

At Fortress Vossenberg, the Hollandse Betonmaatschappij of The Hague built seven casemates. They had been designed by the Stellingbouw Bureau of the Dutch Engineers in April 1939. Due to the harsh winter, construction was not completed until March 1940. The word casemate comes from the Italian casamatta and/or Spanish casamata, both derived from the Byzantine term chasmata, a designation for a fortress with embrasures. Of the seven casemates built in 1939 at Fortress Vossenberg, three so-called S-Casemates, two B-Casemates and the ruins of a G-Casemate now remain. The casemates were manned by 3 soldiers. One soldier took care of draining the gunpowder fumes by means of a pump, a second soldier took care of cooling the machine gun, it got red hot from shooting and yes, the third was the gunner.
