From 1914 to 1918, the village of Hermeville en Woëvre was directly on the front.
It was occupied from 1914 to 1916 by French troops who set up many camps and barracks there. The concrete shelters are still there.
In 1915, the commander of the Verdun stronghold had a Model 1910 140 mm naval gun installed in the woods of Hermeville. This gun aims to destroy the infrastructure built by the Germans.
