German War Cemetery Billy-Montigny

The Billy-Montigny German Military Cemetery was established in June 1915 by the German troops, who buried their dead here until April 1918. More than 800 of them fell in the great battles of the spring and autumn of 1915; as many died as a result of the fierce trench warfare of 1916. Further heavy losses were caused by the Allied attacks in the spring of 1917 north of Arras and at Artois in the autumn. In contrast, the number of people killed in 1918 in trench warfare or during the German offensive in April 1918 is relatively low. After the war, the French military authorities transferred the German soldiers from a cemetery established almost simultaneously in neighboring Hénin-Liétard and from another 16 municipal areas in the area northeast of Arras.
The 2511 fallen rest in individual graves. Of these, 78 remained unnamed.
