After most of the 1,800 Jewish inhabitants of Józefów were murdered by the German 101st reserve police battalion in 1942, only the synagogue and this cemetery remained as silent relics of the Jewish community. Commissioned in the 18th century, the cemetery was damaged during World War II and is in a deplorable state as a result of decades of neglect. It is maintained in memory of the former Jewish inhabitants of Józefów.
