Monument Lives 10,000 Stones

This monument by artist Martine Herman at the Stieltjesstraat was unveiled in 2021. It is in memory of the more than 6,500 Jews from Rotterdam and surroundings deported by the Nazis through Shed 24, most of whom were murdered in the Auschwitz-Birkenau and Sobibor death camps.

The memorial consists of concrete paths in whimsical shapes incorporating thousands of individual stones. Various kinds of ornamental grasses have been planted around them. The pebbles come from the monument Levenslicht by artist Daan Roosegaarde and the National Committee 4 and 5 May. This consisted of 104,000 illuminated pebbles that were displayed in several Dutch cities in 2020. The stones symbolised the Dutch Holocaust victims.

An olive tree in a planter was placed near the memorial by the Israeli embassy and the Jewish National Fund (JNF). The plaque reads, "Lest we forget".
