Crash Site Bristol Beaufighter Mk VIF V8325

This pole commemorates the Bristol Beaufighter Mk VIF V8325 that made an emergency landing on today's Amstel Lake on February 18, 1943 around 11:00 p.m. The plane made an emergency landing on today's Amstel Lake about 1 km from this point.

The aircraft had departed from the British airfield at Coltishall at 9:05 p.m. for an operation on Vlieland. Over Texel, the plane was shot down by German anti-aircraft fire at around 11:03 p.m.

Squadron Leader William Dudley Winward made an emergency landing at high speed on the Amstel Lake. In the crash, he became unconscious and regained consciousness when the plane was on the bottom. He managed to swim to the surface and hoist himself into the dinghy. He was later towed away by a boat. The crash left him with a broken arm and a paralyzed hand. He became a prisoner of war and survived the war.
