Former German War Cemetery Wervik-Nord

From October 1914 onwards, German graves appeared in the open spaces of the municipal cemetery, which had been laid out in 1905. In the following years of war, German extensions were created to the west and east.

After the war, the German graves were grouped together. The German authorities established a separate military cemetery: Ehrenfriedhof Wervik-Nord.

In 1952, the Belgian and German governments agreed that all German graves would be brought together in four large cemeteries in West Flanders: Vladslo, Hooglede, Menen and Langemark. As a result, this cemetery was also cleared and the bodies were transferred to Menen and Langemark. After the evacuation in 1955, the site became the western extension of the municipal cemetery.

The German grave of Lt. Wolfgang Kühne can still be found in the current cemetery. For whatever reason, his body remained in Wervik.
