From October 1914, German graves were introduced to the open spaces of the municipal cemetery which was built in 1905. In the subsequent war years, the German area expanded westward and eastward.
After the war, the German graves were grouped together. The German competent authority built a separate military cemetery: Ehrenfriedhof Wervik-Nord.
After its clearing in 1955, the site became the westward expansion of the town’s cemetery. This cemetery still contains the German grave of Lt. Wolfgang Kühne.
