On September 1, 1942, the SS established a training school in the Jesuit monastery in Valkenburg where Dutch boys were trained to take up leadership positions within the German Reich.
To be admitted, one had to go through a selection process that not only set physical requirements and school performance, but also looked at the Aryan race characteristics. The duration would be a total of 8 years.
The school was closed in the summer of 1944 due to the approaching American troops and moved to Bensberg in Germany.
After the American troops had driven out the Germans in South Limburg, the 91st Evacuation Hospital was established here from September 28, which nursed a total of 12,000 wounded here until the spring of 1945.
After the Americans left, an internment camp was established here from June 1945 for "wrong" Dutch people who had to work in the mines.
