Chemins de Mémoire 14-18 Signeulx

Signeulx and the ambulance - 22 August and the days that followed
The Belgian border town of Signeulx rapidly became the scene of fights between smaller entities. Coming from Mangiennes, via Tellancourt and Saint-Pancré, the French soldiers had to cross the village, as this was the easiest route to Mussy-la-Ville.
The French infantry regiments were slaughtered by the fire of German soldiers stationed around the village. The German army explored the terrain before the fighting, knowledge of the place is to their advantage. The French soldiers are completely surprised. In addition, a thick fog hangs over the entire valley, making it difficult for the troops to advance.
The village then had only one civilian doctor, who was quickly overwhelmed by the number of soldiers to be treated. The wounded were then taken to the ambulance school that had been requisitioned by the Germans.
