Memorial Belgian Military Hospital Beveren-aan-de-IJzer

This memorial for the former military hospital is located on the corner of IJzerstraat and Lindestraat in Beveren-aan-de-IJzer.

Text on the information board:
"As the Belgian front spread to the south, the surgical department of the Belgian military hospital at the Cabour estate in Adinkerke moved to a brand-new complex on Kruisstraat at Beveren-aan-de-IJzer. The short distance to the front (9 km) enabled the wounded to be received quickly. The maximum evacuation time was 3 hours.
The hospital had 500 beds. On average it housed 350 patients and 150 personnel. The hospital experienced its most hectic period during the Battle of Merkem (16 - 18 April 1918), performing more than 500 surgical procedures. During the final offensive (28 September - 11 November 1918) the hospital was again running a full stretch.
A total of 7.965 patients were cared for at the hospital. 623 military personnel and 26 civilian died. The military victims were originally buried in a separate strip in the cemetery of Beveren-aan-de-IJzer. The hospital was dismantled in 1921."
