The Fuggerei was the first social housing complex in Europe.
It dates back to 1521 when it was formally donated by Jakob Fugger as a residential area for poor citizens from Augsburg.
The complex consists of eight streets, bordered by three gates and city walls.
The main gate shows the year of foundation 1519 and the coat of arms of the Fugger family.
The bombings of 25 to 26 February 1944 killed 730 people in Augsburg.
The Fugger family had built an air defense bunker in the Fuggerei in 1943 and 200 residents could find salvation in it.
Nearly 70% of the Fuggerei was destroyed and later completely rebuilt.
In 1957, the bunker was converted into a museum with an exhibition that impressively documents the attack, the extent of the destruction and the reconstruction of the Fuggerei. Images, texts and a film show how the war changed the city and the region.
The complex is open to tourists daily through the main gate.
