Monument SAS Col du Donon

Monument to commemorate the members of the SAS in the area who where taken prisoner and later executed.

In august 1944 operation "Loyton"was initiated.Members of the SAS objectives where to prepare the area for General Pattons Attack.The droppings behind enemy lines consisted off Members of the SAS , weapons for the local resistance, jeeps and fuel.
On the 6th of September the conference at Gérardmer took place under personal attendance off Heinrich Himmler.
Under the cynical name operation "Waldfest" (Forrest party) was initiated.
The aim off the operation was twofold.
Create a no mans land in front the Westwall. (scorched earth) and eliminate the local resistance. At the end off the operation thousands of people where removed from the area ( taken to camps or forced labour ) .Hundreds of people executed and thousands of buildings destroyed.

Operation "Waldfest "led to an increase German soldiers in the area and the 90 SAS men where forced to retreat. 31 of the members where taken prisoner and later executed.
