After the Belgian Congo he reintegrated into the Belgian army.
He was a major when the First World War broke out. On September 12, 1914 he was wounded for the first time in Werchter. He fought first with the First Regiment of Carabiniers and then with the Third Chasseurs on Foot. He was injured again in Diksmuide
November 21, 1915.
In 1916, with the degree of colonel, he was commander of the Twelfth Infantry Brigade and from April 1917 he commanded an infantry division, with whom he saw the last offensives until the end of the war.
On June 26, 1919, he left the army with the grade of lieutenant general.
He entered politics and in November 1921 he was elected Catholic
