Inscriptions on the monument (translation)
"TO ONE OF OUR FOUNDERS OF OUR INDEPENDENCE"
"TO THE DEFENDERS OF OUR INDEPENDENCE"
"TO THE FRENCH SOLDIERS FALLEN AT SAINT-MARD ON 22 AUGUST 1914"

On 22 August 1914, numerous bloody battles took place on the Behaut plateau and in Virton. Many wounded were transported to the hospital post of the Saint-Charles home of French nuns. Many Frenchmen from the 8th division died and were buried there.
Later, around 1920, French families repatriated the bodies of the deceased to their villages of origin. That year a project for a memorial monument was discussed by the Saint-Mard municipal council.
On 20 June 1925, an everlasting concession was granted for the remaining French fallen. For this purpose, four burial vaults were set up in the monument.
According to the inscriptions on the monument, also buried here are: a fighter of the Belgian Revolution of 1830, Belgian military and civilian victims of the First World War, French refugees of the First World War.
