Monument to 2 fallen soldiers from the fort Tancrémont (which is located between Pepinster and Baneux) but who were killed on this site in May 1940.
Soldier Monville and Private Huysmans were killed in a German attack on the nearby bunker Vesdre.
MONVILLE Clément, age 21, soldier with the Regiment Fortifiée de Liége (RFL) , was seriously wounded in the German attack on the bunker and later died of his wounds on May 22nd, 1940. He is buried in the Wegnez cemetery. See photo 4. His tombstone reads died May 15th, 1940. His records at the Department of Defense states that he died on May 22nd. Also his age is incorrect on the headstone.
HUYSMANS Pierre, age 19 !, soldier with the Regiment Fortifiée de Liége (RFL), he died during the German attack on the bunker on May 15th, 1940. He is buried in a grave with two other fallen, in the Verviers cemetery. See photo 5.
Somewhat strangely, the monument bears the date of May 13th, 1940.
