Stumbling Threshold Weteringschans 31

On November 1, 2023, during the seventh hour, the first Stolperschwelle (stumbling threshold) in Amsterdam was unveiled in front of the Barlaeus gymnasium. This memorial plaque marks two tragic moments in the history of the city and school life: on November 1, 1940, 5 Jewish teachers were forcibly dismissed and on September 1, 1941, 65 Jewish students were expelled from the school. The Stolperschwelle is placed just in front of the 'old entrance' of the school and thus establishes a connection with the memorial plaque inside the old entrance of the school, which contains the names of Jewish Barlaeans who died in the war.

On November 1, 1940 – 5 Jewish teachers fired
On September 1, 1941 – 65 Jewish students forced to leave school.
Victims of persecution, deportation and murder.
They remain in our thoughts.
