These two naval guns were made in the 1860s for the navy of the Habsburg Monarchy. These guns were placed on the Habsburg warship "Kaiser Max" which took part in the famous battle of Lissa in 1866 where a victory was achieved over the Italian fleet.
In 1873, the Austro-Hungarian fleet was modernized and therefore the guns were used as ballast on the same ship.
After the collapse of Austria-Hungary, "Kaiser Max" was used by the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes. The name was subsequently changed to "Tivat" and in 1923 to "Neretva".
During the bombardment of Šibenik in 1943, the ship sank along with the guns off the coast of Šibenik. Years later, these cannons surfaced and have been in their current location in front of the palace since 1959.
