The Tewkesbury Voluntary Aid Detachment was originally set up in Watson Hall in the main town on November 13th with 35 beds. Watson Hall soon proved to be of limited size, so when Lord Coventry offered Mitton Farm, a detached 17th century house on the outskirts of Tewkesbury, the Hospital moved to this location in May 1915. The hospital expanded to 70 beds and remained in operation for the remainder of the war convalescing wounded soldiers.
After the war, plaques commemorating the use of the buildings as VAD hospital were erected, however Mitton Manor fell into disrepair and the plaque was removed. In 2016 it was located in Tewkesbury Museum storeroom and returned to the owners of the now refurbished Manor house , where it hangs in pride of place in the entrance porch.
