Memorials Tewkesbury Abbey

Within the Abbey are two memorials.

War Graves Cross Gunner W Roberts
"This cross marked the grave of a Tewkesbury soldier
killed in action in the First World War. After the
war, when the War Graves Commission built more
permanent memorials, the cross was returned to hos
widow, who asked that it should be kept in the Abbey"

by his widow

anniversary of his death

Walter Roberts. 75449. Gunner, 21st Siege Bty, Royal Garrison Artillery. Died 02 Jul 1918. Age 24. Canada Farm Cemetery, Belgium.

Memorial Moores brothers
"A.M.D.G.
In loving memory of
Lieut. Thomas Harold Moore
5th Battalion Gloucestershire Reg.
Killed in action in France Sep 26 1915. Aged 32
and of his brother
Lieut. Lionel Watson Moore
of the same regiment
Killed in action in France Aug 27 1916 Aged 23
Both gave their lives for King and Country
in the cause of God
Lord all pitying Jesu blast
Grant them thine Eternal Rest"

Thomas Harold Moore. Lieutenant. 1st/5th Bn Gloucestershire Regt. Died 27 Sep 1915 (different to plaque). Age 32. Serre Road Cemetery No 1, France.

Thomas was leading a patrol of 14 across no Man's land at night to see if the Germans had evacuated their front line. They soon found that they hadn't as they were met by a German patrol. A firefight ensued with one of the Glosters being hit forcing a retreat. Thomas and Corporal Jackson were carrying the casualty away when Moore was hit. He was initially buried at Puisieux Churchyard before being moved to Serre No 1.

Lionel Watson Moore. Lieutenant. 1st/5th Bn Gloucestershire Regt. Died 27 Aug 1916. Age 22. Thiepval Memorial, France.

Lionel was charged with command of B Company during the Battle of the Somme. On the 27 Aug 1916 , he died in an attack in the Battle of Poziers. The Glosters lost 17 killed and 11 missing, Lionel was among them, his body lost in battle. The attack itself was a success, capturing the German front line and 200 prisoners and 1 machine gun.
