Auxiliary Fire Service Patrol Officer Charlie Gillard (aged 37) was killed following the sixth German air raid on Yeovil in the early hours of April 12 1941. On the evening of April 11th several delayed action high explosive boms were dropped on Yeovil Town centre. One landed on the Corn Exchange building, killing 4 soldiers from the King's Own Scottish Borderers and wounded 5 who were billeted there. Charlie was fighting the fire in the building when a delayed action bomb exploded.
Charlie was given a ceremonial funeral with his coffin being transported on a fire engine and the Pipes and Drums of the KOSB leading the procession.
The plaque is mounted on the only surviving section of the Corn Exchange
