This is bunker CF 4-2.
The bunker is part of bunker CF 4 from the sector of Chaudfontaine-Fléron from de 2nd line of defense for the city of Liège (la Position Fortifiée de Liège, PFL 2). The bunker is part of the defense for the nearby forts of Chaudfontaine and Fléron.
This bunker and CF 5-2 are the second line of bunkers within this sector.
The bunker is located at the end of a farmers field and is almost not visible. It had many overgrowth with ivy and shrubs. The other side of the bunker is coverd with soil. Because the bunker was partly underground it was not possible to establish of there were gunopenings on that side. Probably because of the type, the bunker would be equiped with gunopenings.
The steel door has been replaced to prevent trespassing.
The walls and ceiling of the bunkers from the PFL were standard 1.30 m. thick and of reinforced concrete. They had to be able to withstand shells of 150 mm. To illustrate, the caliber of shells a Königstiger could fire was caliber 88 mm. Thus, only heavier caliber field guns could penetrate the concrete and potentially destroy the bunker.
The bunkers were built in the 1930s.
After the war, when the bunkers lost their strategic value for the Belgian army, the plots of land on which they stood were sold. All the metal of the hatches and doors was sold as scrap metal. Hence the that most bunkers are now on private plots.
