Statue Ernst Thälmann Weimar

The Ernst Thälmann Monument is considered a memorial to the murder of 56,000 prisoners in the former Buchenwald concentration camp. It is dedicated to the political opponents of the Nazi regime, fellow concentration camp prisoners and former chairman of the German Communist Party Ernst Thälmann (1886–1944).

Ernst Thälmann was the leader of the German Communist Party, Kommunistische Partei Deutschlands, (KPD) during the Weimar Republic.

In January 1933, Thälmann tried to organize a strike to overthrow Hitler. This attempt failed. In February of that year, Thälmann organized a meeting where he called for Hitler to be deposed by force. Thälmann was then arrested by the Gestapo in Berlin on March 3 and imprisoned for eleven years. In August 1944, he was executed at the Buchenwald concentration camp on Adolf Hitler's personal orders.
