Belgian War Grave Thiméon

The cemetery in Thiméon contains the grave of a military victim of the Second World War. It concerns PIERRE Simon, soldier of the 1st Chasseurs, who died in Willemstad on 30 May 1940.
After the capitulation of Belgium on 28 May 1940, large numbers of Belgian soldiers were taken prisoner of war and transported to Germany. On 30 May the ship Rhenus 127 packed with more than a thousand Belgians, ran into a mine on the Hollandsch Diep near Willemstad. In this disaster 166 Belgian soldiers died.
The body of PIERRE Simon was repatriated by his father in January 1941.
