War Memorial Bilstain

This monument in the cemetery commemorates the residents and soldiers of Bilstain who died in the First and Second World Wars.

Died during the First World War

HANNOTTE Eugène, aged 30, from Bilstain, soldier in the 1st Grenadier Regiment, killed in action at Paschendale on 29 September 1918 and missing since.

OLIVIER Leopold, age 21, born in Bilstain, soldier in the 1st regiment Carbiniers Cyclistes, killed by shrapnel in his thigh at Stuivekenskerke on 18 March 1918.

They are both also mentioned on the memorial plaque a few metres away at the municipal primary school.

BAILLY Jean, age 34, executed at Bilstain by the German army on 9 August 1914. He is burried at the cemtery of Limbourg. He is also rembered on the warmemorial of Limbourg and the lpaques at the municipalityhall of Limbourg


Died during World War II

DETHIER Josephine, aged 54, member of the resistance (Clarence network), arrested on 14 February 1943 , deported to Ravensbrück concentration camp on 25 August 1944 and died of hardship there on 11 November 1944.

HENDRICK Marcel, aged 39, a member of the volunteer fire brigade, died on 10 May 1940. He is also remembered with a special plaque in the tunnel under the railway at Bilstain.

It also commemorates veterans from Bilstain who defended the homeland as volontaries (volunteers) or miliciens (soldiers).
