Unveiled in 1994, this monument in Erfurt's main cemetery commemorates those who had to flee from the former German territory in Eastern Europe, and the subsequent purges and expulsion of German-speaking inhabitants (Volks Germans) from Russia, Poland, Yugoslavia, Hungary, Czechoslovakia and Romania.
An estimated 14 million of these "Heimatvertriebenen" fled during 1945-1949 and had to try to rebuild their lives within Germany's new borders. By a rough estimate, 2 million of them lost their lives during this flight.
