Just next to the entrance to Colmar's Nécropole Nationale stands the Departmental Memorial in the form of five steles to the fallen and missing soldiers from the Haut-Rhin Department during the de-colonialization conflicts of Morocco and Tunisia and the War of Independence in Algeria between 1952 and 1962.
The war in Algeria was not officially recognized as a war until 1999. Before that, it was considered a domestic conflict. The main stele is adorned with the cross of the Agadès (Southern Cross) and represents the eternal flame.
