In March 1917, Bouchain became the central logistic- and medical centre of the "Siegfried-Stellung" through which this "Kriegsgräberstätte" was constructed.
It was in use until October 1918.
It contains 1,638 German, including 190 unidentified fallen soldiers and 2 deceased Russian World War I prisoners of war. 500 of the fallen died here in a lazaret as a result of their wounds received during the fighting for the "Siegfried-Stellung", the Easter Battles of Arras and the Tank Battle of Cambrai in 1917.
The rest died during the spring offensive of 1918 and the delaying battles during the retreat from August to October 1918. Of these, 900 were brought together by the French administration in the years 1921 to 1924 from makeshift cemeteries elsewhere in the area.
A steel high cross adorns the centre of the cemetery.
The 3 dead of Jewish descent were interred under a stele with the following inscription: Here rests .......... May his soul be included in the circle of the living.
