Memorial Antoine-Adolphe Fonck

This monument commemorates Antoine-Adolphe Fonck, who was stationed on these barracks at the center of the city of Liège. The Caserne des Ecoliers, where the Lanciers were quartered.

Antoine-Adolphe Fonck was the first Belgian soldier to die on Aug. 4th, 1914, at Thimister during the German invasion of Belgium. He had been sent on reconnaissance to see if the Germans had crossed the border. Upon seeing the enemy (German Hussars) he dismounted and opened fire. After first his horse was fatally hit he too was fatally hit a short time later.

The monument says:

On these barracks
from 1855 until 1914 was stationed
the 2nd Regiment Lancers
to which calvalryman FONCK belonged
the first soldier to be killed by the ennemy
on August 4th 1914 a THIMISTER
