Bunker IR 7 Jupille

This is a so called anti-irruption bunker. The bunker is part of the 3rd line of defence for the city of Liège, la Position Fortifiée de Liège, PFL 3.

These kind of bunkers were intended to slow down advancing troops. These bunkers were constant manned unlike bunkers in the defensie lines.

The bunker defended the road towards the city of Liège from the eastside.

Like more bunkers in the area this bunker also has the redbrick camouflage pattern. The doors and windows have 'bluestone' frames so the bunker would fit in with the houses in the area. These houses have the typical architectural style of 'Maaslandse renaissance'. This style differs by using red bricks and bleustone frames and accents.

On the ground floor would hold the 47 mm anti-tank cannon (this can not be seen because of the construction which was built against the bunker). On the first floor a machingun and searchlight. The squarshaped hole above the door was a grenadelauncher. The soldiers dropped handgrenades through this hole when they had to defend themselves as the enemy was at short distance.

The big round hole was for ventilating. On the inside was a big ventilator to quickly remove smoke when the canon and machinegun were fired. This smoke was toxic.

After the war the castiron shutters and door were sold as scrap.
