This is a so called anti-irruption bunker. The bunker is part of the 3rd line of defence for the city of Liège, la Position Fortifiée de Liège, PFL 3.
These kind of bunkers were intended to slow down advancing troops. These bunkers were constant manned unlike bunkers in the defensie lines. The bunker would defend the southside of the city of Liège.
On the ground floor would hold the the 47 mm anti-tank cannon and a machingun (streetside). On the second floor the bunker would hold two machinguns and a searchlight. The squarshaped hole above the door was a grenadelauncher. The soldiers dropped handgrenades through this hole when they had to defend themselves as the enemy was at short distance.
The bunker still has some original steel door and two shutters.
The big round hole at the backside was for ventilating. On the inside was a big ventilator to quickly remove smoke when the canon and machinegun were fired. This smoke was toxic.
After the war the remaining steel shutters were sold as scrap.
