This monument was erected to commemorate the victims of the Katyn massacre. In the spring of 1940, at least 21,768 Polish civilians, including more than 10,000 Polish Army officers, were executed near the village of Katyn, Russia by the Soviet Union's NKVD (People's Commissariat for Internal Affairs). This executed victims who were considered "enemies of the Soviet power" by shooting them in the back of the head with a pistol.
