‘s Graventafel Passchendaele - 100 Years Great War 2014-18

At the ’s Graventafel junction a little further stands the New Zealand Forces Memorial. The monument was inaugurated in 1924, in memory of New Zealand’s participation in the Battle of Broodseinde on 4 October 1917.

The New Zealanders succeeded in taking the Mittelriegel, a defensive line connecting the German Wilhelm and Flanders I positions. They took 1.200 prisoners of war that day. The attack was seen as a success despite the fact that 450 of their men fell. One of them was Captain Neville Henry Arden of the Otago Regiment. In everyday life he was a successful architect who was interested in weapons and cricket. This driven soldier gained lots of experience in Egypt and France before fighting in the Battle of Broodseinde. He was buried on the battlefield and after the war was reburied at Tyne Cot Cemetry.
