Memorial Battle of the Lys 1940 Kortrijk

The Battle of the Lys lasted from May 24 to 28, 1940.
Hundreds of thousands of Belgian, British and German soldiers fought the last major battle of the eighteen-day campaign in those warm May days.

On May 25, 1947,the provisional National Leie Monument was unveiled in the King Albert Park. This elongated stone was donated by the Liège veterans association and bears the inscription:
"A ceux de / to this of /
1940 "

"40 - U.F.A.C. / V.O.V. - 45".

The Kortrijk branch 1940-1945 of the National Fighters Union organized a serene ceremony on this occasion, followed by the unveiling of the memorial stone.
Both associations then set up a 'Leie-Lys' committee, with the intention of paying annual tribute to the victims of the Battle of the Lys,to the Belgian army and to King Leopold III.
