A memorial stone has been bricked into the wall of J.M. van der Meylaan 1 in Amsterdam in memory of four municipal officials who lost their lives during the occupation years.
The text on the memorial reads:
'
"IN MEMORY OF THE
MUNICIPAL WORKERS
M. ANCONA
J. BIERMAN
S. FRANK
AND J. DE VRIES
WHO FELL AS VICTIMS
OF TERROR 1940-1945"
As to why exactly the names of these employees were placed on the memorial stone, it is a bit of a guess. The homes on J.M. van der Meylaan were completed around the end of the 1980s on the former site of the cattle market and abattoir. However, the stone looks older and will have been reinstated at some point. J. de Vries is known to have been a butcher at the abattoir. It is therefore plausible that they worked there.
These were the Jewish employees:
Mozes Ancona born 22-11-1889, perished 24-9-1943 in Auschwitz
Juda Bierman born 10-4-1880, perished 10-9-1943 in Auschwitz
Samson Frank born 18-10-1896, perished 26-3-1943 in Sobibor
Jacob de Vries born 9-1-1895, perished on 4-6-1943 in Sobibor
