Stumbling Stones Spoorstraat 36

These small brass plaques (Stolpersteine or Stumbling Stones), which were laid on 26-11-2023 commemorate:

David Schielaar born 1883,
interned in Vught on 10-4-1943, deported from Westerbork to Sobibor on 10-5-1943 and murdered there on 13-5-1943.
Ester Granade Schielaar-Meijer born 1883,
interned in Vught on 10-4-1943, deported from Westerbork to Sobibor on 10-5-1943 and murdered there on 13-5-1943.
Aron Schielaar born 1912,
interned in Vught on 9-4-1943, deported from Westerbor to Sobibor on 6-7-1943 and murdered there on 9-7-1943.
Izaak Ahbraham Schielaar born 1915,
deported on 7-8-1942 from Westerbork to Auschwitz and murdered there on 30-9-1942.
Louis Schielaar born 1917,
Deported on 24-11-1942 from Westerbork to Auschwitz and murdered in Central Europe on 31-3-1944.

David Schielaar was originally from Dordrecht and a teacher of religion.

"Stolpersteine" is an art project in Europe by Gunter Demnig commemorating victims of National Socialism (Nazism).
Stolpersteine (Stumbling Stones) are small, 10x10cm brass plaques placed in the sidewalk in front of a residence of (mostly Jewish) victims murdered by the Nazis. Each plaque is engraved with the victim's name, date of birth and place (usually a concentration camp) and date of death. In this way, Gunter Demnig gives an individual memorial to each victim. One stone, one name, one person. He quotes the Talmud: "A person is forgotten only when his or her name is forgotten."

Borne was the first place in the Netherlands where Stolpersteine were laid. This happened on 29-11-2007
