It was at the end of the First World War that the idea arose among local political leaders to erect a war memorial.
In 1926 it was placed on the facade of the town hall.
Following the demolition of the town hall in the 1990s, the monument was moved to the Queen Astrid Park.
It is a limestone monument designed by architect R. Collin and elaborated by sculptor Alphonse Coppens.
The homeland is depicted in the form of an armed woman with a sword in her right hand and supporting a dead soldier with her left arm.
In addition to the central part, two low walls were built on either side for the coats of arms of the various local patriotic associations.
The two world wars are mentioned on the memorial stone.
