In front of the headquarters of the 4th Division in Cluj is a monument commemorating General Nicolae Dascalescu.
He came from a poor family and at the age of 22 he went to study at the Military School in Bucharest and after 2 years in 1908 he finished and was given the rank of Lieutenant.
He fought in the Second Balkan War, the First World War and the War between Romania and Hungary (November 1918 to August 3, 1919)
At the start of the Second World War he held the rank of Major General and commanded several Romanian divisions. With the 21st Division he took part in the siege of Odessa, after which he became commander of the 2nd Romanian Corps. His Corps was largely destroyed during Operation Uranus (Battle of Stalingrad) and the remains were taken back to Romania to be rebuilt.
After the coup, the Romanians switched sides and he became part of the 4th army that led the attack in Transylvania. He became commander of the 4th Army and was wounded during the fighting for Banská Bystrica.
After the war he was fired and accused as a war criminal, but not convicted. However, from 1951 to 1955 he was found guilty and imprisoned. He died in 1969.
