Memorial Gheorghe Avramescu

In front of the headquarters of the 4th Division in Cluj is a monument commemorating General Gheorghe Avramescu.
At the age of 22 he went to study at the Military School in Bucharest and after 2 years in 1908 he finished and received the rank of Lieutenant.
He fought in the Second Balkan War and the First World War, fighting in the Battle of the Arges in December 1916 as commander of the 2nd Battalion, 38th Regiment. During these battles he was decorated with the Ordinul Steaua României (Order of the Romanian Star).
He also earned the Ordinul Coroana României (Order of the Romanian Crown) during the battle of Mărășești.
During the Second World War he was successively commander of the 10th Division, the Mountain Corps, the 3rd Corps, the 6th Corps and the 4th Army and took part in Operation Munich, the Battle of the Sea of Azov, the Crimea Campaign and the Siege from Sevastopol.
After the Romanians switched sides, he fought with the 4th Army in the Battle of Turda, the Battle of Debrecen and the attack on the Zvolen–Banská Bystrica line.
On March 2, 1945, he was summoned to the commander of the 40th Soviet Army, where he was probably arrested. According to the Soviets, the car he was riding in was attacked by an aircraft and he died as the car's sole occupant on March 3, 1945.
