The Moerbeke-Waas cemetery contains a memorial for the veterans of the First World War.
The original, individual graves were located along the wall of the cemetery in Moerbeke Center and the Kruisstraat cemetery. Following the removal of those individual gravestones in 2015, it was decided, to preserve the memory, to erect one common monument in honor of the veterans.
The materials from the separate graves have been incorporated into the new monument, so as not to lose the connection with the past.
On the bluestone gravestone you can read the following inscription in the form of a haiku:
"Metamorphosis
of bare and gray
Glory
to our heroes"
Below this is the Moerbeke coat of arms: two diagonally crossed spades, accompanied by a leafy turnip in the shield head, with a crucifix next to it.
Next to the monument are two columns on which copper plates are placed with, in alphabetical order, the names of the veterans and the year of birth and death below.
Top left:
"Monument in memory of
the veterans aged 14-18" with 62 nameplates underneath in a double row.
On the right hang 72 nameplates in a double row.
